Recycling centre redevelopment on the way

23 March 2020

The public can look forward to a new-look and more user-friendly Recycling Centre Balcatta after Council voted in favour of a full redevelopment of the popular facility.

The $16.8 million revamp is set to update many outdated aspects of the ageing facility set to reach the end of their useful life.

Amongst the centre’s shortfalls, its single entry and exit point regularly causes congestion on site and the existing Waste Transfer Station - which originally took shape 40 years ago as a bailing station - is now not fit for purpose.

Mayor Mark Irwin said the much-needed upgrade would make it easier for the community to access the facility and use its extensive recycling services.

“The redevelopment will re-shape the facility into three distinct areas, with a new free community drop-off section that will also offer a container deposit scheme refund point,” Mayor Irwin said. “All up, it’s going to provide excellent facilities for residents.”

The revamped facility will offer the following areas:

Free Community Drop-Off:

An area where the community can drop off materials for recycling or re-use at no charge, facilities include:

  • Recycle Centre (Tip Shop)

  • Container Deposit Scheme
  • Household Hazardous Waste
  • Electronic waste
  • Community Recycling (cardboard, steel, polystyrene, etc).

Paid and Pass Community Drop-Off:

An area for the community to use tip passes to dispose of waste or pay for waste disposal, facilities include:

  • Green waste
  • Inert waste (eg. rubble)
  • Mattresses, white goods and tyre recycling
  • General junk and residual waste.

Waste Transfer Station:

A commercial and bulk waste area that includes:

  • Commercial Waste Transfer
  • Domestic Kerbside Waste Transfer
  • The City is set to start developing designs for a revamped centre later this year and work is expected to get underway during the 2021/2022 financial year.
