Proven waste reduction program arrives in the City

To help boost local recycling rates, the City is set to carry out bin tagging during the next few months.

A partnership with the WA Local Government Association, the program involves a quick check of household general waste, recycling and garden organics bins at randomly selected properties across the City.

If there’s a need to provide feedback on how households can reduce waste and recycle more, suggestions will be provided via tags and attached to bin handles.

Mayor Mark Irwin said the City was one of 22 local governments to take part in the latest round of the bin tagging program after WALGA received funding from the State Government.

“This program is great news for the environment,” Mayor Irwin said. “It gives us an opportunity to share important information with residents about putting the right materials in the right bin.”

“We all want to do the right thing when it comes to cutting back on waste, and this is one way we can help clear up any confusion out there about what can and cannot be recycled.”

WALGA successfully piloted the program in 2015 with the Town of Kwinana, City of Joondalup and Town of Cambridge. Results reflected a substantial increase in correct recycling rates across the three local authorities ranging from 51 per cent up to 91 per cent.
