Update on Managing Coastal Erosion at Mettams Pool

22 April 2020

The City thanks its residents for taking part in the community consultation project last year which looked at managing the erosion experienced at Mettams Pool.

The City’s immediate focus is to protect and preserve Mettam’s and to do that we are currently considering short term measures such as sand nourishment. This treatment will provide a short term solution to help mitigate the impact of coastal erosion as well as securing the ramps and stair access whilst we consider longer term (and more expensive) solutions.

Whilst the City has completed a number of surveys and risk assessments over the coastal strip to better understand the impacts of sea level rise and storm surge, we do have further work to do to vision the future of the entire coastline and complete the adaptation planning exercise – the final element of the CHRMAP (Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Planning).  The City would like to complete that work over the next twelve months and it has made a submission to the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage for funding to assist us to finalise the CHRMAP.  Adaptation planning will enable the City to consider a range of options and treatments which will provide short, medium and long term countermeasures.  This work will also highlight the necessary budgets to complete the works.

The City has made provisions for short term adaptation measures at Mettams Pool in the coming financial year while also setting out to complete CHRMAP for the entire 6.5 km coastal length.
