Stirling announces basketballer Damian Martin as first Youth Ambassador

16 September 2019

In a slam-dunk for the City of Stirling, Australian basketball champion Damian Martin will be our first Youth Ambassador.

The newly-appointed position was created to coincide with the launch of Stirling’s first Youth Framework.

The strategy is designed to support the City’s young people contribute to community life, society and environment in meaningful ways.

Alongside the framework, a number of fun events will be launched throughout October including Groundswell Surf Festival, Basketball at Osborne, Yagan Virtual Reality and Skate and Skirmish targeting the City’s younger residents.

Director of Community Development Michael Quirk said Damian’s appointment was a real coup for the City of Stirling.

“We are thrilled that Damian accepted our invitation to become our first Youth Ambassador”, he said.

“Having him on board means we have a well-respected and high profile sports star to help promote Stirling’s youth framework and to encourage young people to contribute their knowledge, skills and experience to community life”.

On his recent appointment, Damian Martin, said he was excited to be able to support such an innovative initiative.

“I believe that an energised youth is one of the community’s greatest assets and it’s so important that local governments provide avenues for their engagement”, he said.

“I look forward to promoting the framework and the exciting calendar of events that Stirling has created to connect with its younger residents”.

According to the 2016 Census statistics, 17 percent of City of Stirling residents were aged between 10 and 24. This data prompted the City to enhance the youth engagement component within its community development activities.
