New recycling option rolls into local school

Signing up to the City’s new four-wheeled bin service has proved a big win for St Gerard's Primary School in Westminster and the environment.

The school is the first in the City of Stirling to take delivery of a new 660-litre co-mingled recycling bin as part of a new commercial waste collection service. The service offers 660-litre or 1,100-litre co-mingled recycling bins and general waste bins.

Co-mingled recycling bins divert substantially more materials away from landfill and provide opportunities to create new products from discarded items, which ultimately benefits the environment. 

Acting Chief Executive Officer Michael Littleton said interest in the new service continued to grow, as word spread to commercial customers like local schools.

“The students at St Gerard’s Primary School are leading by example and doing a brilliant job with their recycling efforts,” Mr Littleton said. 

“This new service effectively diverts large amount of materials from going to landfill, so we hope to encourage more and more commercial operators and schools to get on board.”

St Gerard's Primary School Principal Mark Miloro said introducing the new four-wheeled bin had helped the school reduce its landfill waste in just a few weeks.

“Teaching our students life-long habits to positively impact our environmental footprint through this initiative is a great step forward,” Mr Miloro said. 

Dozens of the new recycling bins – also known as rear-lift bins – are now in use across the City at local schools and businesses including the North Coast Church and Le Rebelle Restaurant.

Like household recycling bins, items such as plastic milk containers, glass bottles, flattened cardboard and newspapers can go into the bigger four-wheeled recycling bins.
