City Wins Gold Waterwise Award

A mix of community projects and water saving programs has helped the City secure its first gold status award in the Waterwise Councils Program.

The Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation introduced the annual program a decade ago to support councils in their efforts to improve water efficiency across their operations and in the community.

The City of Stirling was one of six WA councils to achieve Gold Waterwise status at this year’s awards.

Minister for Water Dave Kelly presented the gold honour to Mayor Mark Irwin this week.

Mayor Irwin said the award acknowledged the City’s sustainability efforts ranging from community-minded programs like Living Green Schools to Waterwise endorsement of the Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre and Leisurepark Balga.

“As Perth’s biggest council, we are very conscious that water is a precious resource we can’t afford to waste, so we have a range of initiatives that demonstrate our commitment to water conservation,” Mayor Irwin said.

“It’s also rewarding that the community has supported local programs such as Waterwise Gardening Workshops, the City’s Verge Rebate Scheme and promotions offering residents free Waterwise verge plants.”

Other projects run by the City with a focus on saving water include the use of rain cut-off switches that automatically switch off irrigation systems during rainy periods and carrying out street tree plantings that aid storm water management.

Since 2009, the Waterwise Councils Program has endorsed a grand total of 40 councils.
