Hold the phone! City wins 2019 MobileMuster Award

18 June 2019

Thanks to the community’s remarkable efforts recycling old mobile phones, the City has added to its collection of MobileMuster awards.

The City picked up the Top Recycler Award for WA in the 2019 MobileMuster Local Government Awards after previously taking the title in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

To win the state award for local government, the City of Stirling collected the most mobile phone components for recycling between 1 May 2018 and 30 April 2019.

Up from last year’s recycling grand total of 244kg, the City collected a big 300kg of mobile phones to take the honours this year.

Mayor Mark Irwin said that winning the award three years in a row was an incredible achievement for the community and showed that recycling was still “top of mind” for people across the City of Stirling.

“A big focus for the City is diverting waste from landfill and it’s programs like MobileMuster that help us work with the community to make it happen,” Mayor Irwin said. “Everyone that got behind the program can be proud that they’ve helped the City lead the way in Western Australia when it comes to mobile phone recycling.”

There are more than a dozen Mobile Muster collection points across the City of Stirling including the Administration Centre, the Recycling Centre Balcatta and all six (6) City libraries.

For more than a decade, the not for profit MobileMuster program has partnered with close to 400 councils across Australia to encourage the community to recycle their old phones. The program is funded by all major handset manufacturers and network carriers.

During the past 12 years, Australian councils have diverted 42 tonnes of mobile phone components from landfill to manufacture new products.

Winners of 2019 MobileMuster Local Government Awards were announced at the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) National General Assembly in Canberra this week.
