Thank you to the members of our coastal community who participated in the community forum held on Saturday 6 July 2019 at Stirling Community Centres - North Beach (Charles Riley).
This workshop followed a community values survey, which sought feedback on what the community values about Mettams Pool, its facilities and amenity. Open from 24 May to 16 June 2019, the online survey received more than 490 responses and 1,600 visits to this project page. Coastal Ward Councillor Karen Caddy, along with representatives from the City, Department of Transport and coastal engineering consultants MP Rogers & Associates provided an overview of coastal erosion processes. Three high-level concept plans, which were informed from the results of the community values survey, were presented and the pros and cons of each explained. The plans are available in the Document Library.
More than 70 community members participated in group discussions, facilitated by Elton Consulting, and worked through each of the three concept plans presented. The groups provided feedback on what they liked about each concept and identified areas that could be improved.
At the end of the forum, participants were asked to indicate a preferred option by placing a green sticker on the plan they wanted to see progressed to a more detailed design. Option 2 was the preferred option, with 56 participants supporting this concept.
While this option will see the relocation of current facilities, removal of sections of existing dunes and less beach available throughout the year, participants overwhelmingly supported the improved access to the beach and water, space for an activated recreational grassed area at the lower level and direct universal access link from the toilet to the beach. A number of suggestions and improvements were identified by participants and captured as part of the process.
Next steps for the City will be to work with MP Rogers & Associates to progress the design for option 2 that considers and incorporates, where possible, the suggestions and feedback provided by forum participants and the broader themes identified through the community values survey.
A 15 per cent concept design is expected to be finalised by the end of August 2019, and costed by the end of September 2019. The City then intends to report to Council following the October Council Elections and seek guidance on a strategic approach to be delivered by the City.
