No stopping one of the City’s oldest volunteers

At age 90, Maxine Lamb is a local treasure who continues to dedicate her time to multiple volunteering roles at the City of Stirling.

Each week, the Doubleview resident supports people with intellectual disabilities at the City’s Joe Camilleri Day Club in Scarborough. Maxine has become a fixture at the club for many years; supporting City staff members deliver music, drama and life skills programs as well as opportunities for clients to maintain their independence.

Whether it’s helping prepare meals, assisting with craft sessions, or chipping in to help organise the club’s regular concerts, this spirited senior never stops. Described as an “all-rounder” by staff, Maxine is also always at the ready with a light-hearted comment.

“When I’m in the kitchen, it’s a case of my kitchen rules,” Maxine said. “This is what my mum did; I followed my mother into volunteering.” “I love them (customers); they’re like children to me.”

Maxine also spends several hours each week as a volunteer with the City’s Books on Wheels service at Scarborough Library. On average, Maxine selects about 20 books a week for clients unable to get to and from the library. When asked why she volunteers, Maxine said it was as simple as the enjoyment she gets from meeting and helping people.

Mayor Mark Irwin said it was the efforts of volunteers like Maxine that helped keep the City’s services moving.

“It’s great to put the spotlight on incredible volunteers like Maxine,” Mayor Irwin said. “I’ve known her for many years and she’s always thinking of others and you can’t put a price on that sort of dedication. We’re always very grateful for the efforts of volunteers, as they’re out in the community making a real difference.”

Over the years, Maxine has won several City honours for her community-minded nature including a Volunteers Make a Difference Award and a Silver Community Service Award.

She has also volunteered with the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club since the mid-1970s and has the distinction of being the first female to receive a life membership with the club.
