National Meals on Wheels Day just got tastier

28 August 2019

Everyone who enjoys a scrumptious dish from the City’s Meals on Wheels service on Wednesday 28 August 2019 will be raising a fork to help celebrate National Meals on Wheels Day.

Each year, the national event provides a great opportunity to remind residents that the City delivers delicious and nutritious two-course meals across the community on an ongoing or short-term basis.

Delectable meals being prepared for clients as part of a special National Meals on Wheels Day menu this year include beef and vegetable casserole as a main, and apple and rhubarb crumble for dessert.

Mayor Mark Irwin said while the annual event put a spotlight on the Meals on Wheels program across Australia, it also highlighted the great work of the City’s dedicated volunteers who deliver meals to dozens of suburbs including Highgate, Mt Lawley, Dianella and Yokine.

“Thanks to the efforts of about 100 volunteers, we are able to deliver meals throughout the City and just as importantly provide a friendly social interaction for a lot of people,” Mayor Irwin said. “The service now also offers diabetic-friendly meals as well as meals for people with swallowing difficulties like dysphagia.”

When it comes to the numbers, the City’s Food Services team prepares about 5,000 meals each month at its purpose-built kitchen in Balcatta. All meals are delivered freshly chilled so they can be heated and eaten when it suits customers.

The service prides itself on offering a six-week rotating menu to ensure that home diners get plenty of variety. The meals are generally larger and more nutritious than pre-packed meals you get at the supermarket.

If you want to give the service a try, flavorsome two-course meals are available to buy from Meals on Wheels headquarters at 97 Delawney Street in Balcatta between 10.00am and 3.00pm on weekdays.

Looking at the Meals on Wheels service at a state level, about 90 service providers throughout WA provide close to 930,000 meals to approximately 10,000 clients in their own homes and through dine-in services.
