Tasty Open Day on the Way

05 April 2019

Mark your calendar for a particularly scrumptious event when the City’s Community Food Services kitchen hosts an open day on Saturday 13 April.

Enjoy a taste of the delicious eats available from the Community Food Services program and get an insider’s view on how meals are prepared at 97 Delawney Street, Balcatta between 10.00am and 2.00pm.

On the day, there will be a selection of tasty dishes on offer including butter chicken and saffron rice, chick pea and spinach stroganoff, shepherd’s pie and corn fritters. All of these meals will also be available for purchase during the open day.

Mayor Mark Irwin said he hoped people of all ages would come along to the event, at the very least to have a look at the inner workings of a busy commercial kitchen and to find out what goes into preparing 9,500 meals each month.

“If you’re thinking of using the service for yourself or a loved one, this is a great opportunity to road test some of the delicious foods available,” Mayor Irwin said. “The other good news is that visitors can try plenty of samples.”

Right in the heart of Balcatta, the City’s purpose-built Community Food Services kitchen opened in 2001 and since then staff members have whipped up tens of thousands of delicious and nutritious meals. All meals are delivered freshly chilled so they can be heated and eaten when it suits customers.

The service prides itself on offering a six-week rotating menu to ensure that home diners get plenty of variety. The meals are generally larger and more nutritious than pre-packed meals you get at the supermarket. Meals can also be delivered on a short-term or ongoing basis.
