New Accessible Toilet and Changing Room in Scarborough

02 November 2018

The City of Stirling has handed out the first master keys to its new Changing Places Facility, located on The Promenade at Scarborough Beach as part of its official opening.

Changing Places is a voluntary initiative that advocates for fully accessible public toilet and change facilities for users with severe and profound needs where they require assistance from carers.

The new facility includes a toilet, showering amenities, a hoist, adult changing table, automatic door and space for two people to assist the user with their needs. It can also be accessed 24-hours a day, seven days a week via a master key.

City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said the facility, which was built in conjunction with the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority and in consultation with access consultants, had been accredited and registered on the national database.

“We are really pleased that we now have a Changing Places facility available for use at one of our most visited beaches,” Mayor Irwin said.

“It was a privilege to be part of the first tour of the facility and the overwhelming feedback at the opening and since has been extremely positive,”

“Some members of the community who joined me on the tour provided some good feedback on how the facility could be even more accessible, which the City has taken on board and is currently working with consultants, staff and the City’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Group to consider how it can be incorporated.”

A total of 18 local government Changing Places are being built across WA in metropolitan and regional areas.

In addition to this, the MRA and Department of Sport and Recreation have committed to building Changing Places in their redevelopment projects including Elizabeth Quay, Yagan Square and Scarborough Beach which are now open, as well as at the Waterbank development in East Perth and three more at the Perth Stadium.
