Dianella BMX facility update

26 November 2018

Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback on the proposed Dianella BMX and Cycling Facility throughout May and June 2018.

The City assessed and collated a number of comments from the community which covered a range of suggestions and feedback topics such as accessibility, safety and security and key design features. Over 130 individual responses were received through surveys, emails, letters and phone calls.

Of the submissions, 85 per cent of individuals were supportive of the proposal, 3 per cent provided conditional support and 12 per cent did not support the proposal.

Taking into consideration the comments that were received and that 85 per cent of respondents support the Dianella BMX and Cycling Facility, the project will now progress to the next stage of concept design.

All feedback received from the community will be further considered through this design stage.

The base statistical results can be found under the document library on the Dianella BMX and Cycle Facility project page.

Some of the key statistics included:

  • More than 50 per cent of responses were from the suburb of Dianella with the majority finding out about the project through a letter in the mail (37 per cent)
  • The predominant age group responding was between 35 - 49 years (65 per cent)
  • Fifty per cent of individuals indicated they were a parent or guardian of someone who rides and that 39 per cent of individuals would visit the facility with their children
  • Those who ride utilised mountain bikes (29 per cent), BMX (23 per cent) and scooters (21 per cent) the most and identified their skill level as intermediate (45 per cent) or beginner (33 per cent)
  • There was majority support for a combination of surface materials (e.g. natural, asphalt, timber) to be considered (38 per cent) with natural surface materials also being popular.

The community will have further opportunity to provide feedback following the completion of the concept design. These design and consultation outcomes will then be subject to Council endorsement prior to further progression of the project.
