Welcome to the April edition of Stirling Scene.

The City recently held our Electors' General Meeting 2022-23, with the City's annual report adopted and a range of elector motions passed. City officers will research each motion and provide a report back to Council on proposed responses to these initiatives.

The City has recently been successful in receiving significant funding from both the State and Federal Government. More than half a million dollars in grants from the WA State Government will fund upgrades to the floodlights at the Princess Wallington and Des Penman reserves.

We have also won gold status once again for our waterwise initiatives, giving us access to significant funding to enable us to better preserve groundwater. $1.2 million was also provided by the Federal Government to boost our purchase of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of our commitment to reducing emissions.

The City's Trackless Tram Trial has been submitted for an award in the 2024 National Awards for Local Government. The Productivity through Innovation category recognises local governments that utilise technological innovations, consider sustainability and address long-term infrastructure priorities that offer clear economic benefits. Click here to vote for our project!

I am pleased to report that the City has been working closely with Transperth to monitor the growing popularity of Scarborough Beach - especially on Thursdays during the Sunset Markets - and this has led to an increase in the number of 990 bus services.

Please remember that The Esplanade, Scarborough Beach will be closed from the Scarborough Beach Road roundabout to Peters by the Sea from 6.00am this Good Friday until 10.00pm Easter Monday to facilitate the NBL 3x3 Hustle National Championships and Scarborough SLAM.

On behalf of Council I wish you a safe and restful Easter long weekend.

Charity clothing drop-off is back

The Charity Clothing Drop-off Day is returning to the City Administration Centre carpark at 25 Cedric Street, Stirling on Saturday 13 April from 9.00am to 1.00pm.

Our last drop-off day in 2023 was a big one, with almost 21 tonnes of items given to charities to put to good use.

Charities will accept old, new or worn-out clothes that are still in good condition. Items that cannot be repurposed will be recycled into useful things such as industrial rags.

Welcome statements installed

The installation of new Entry Statements at key locations across the City of Stirling is well underway, replacing five older assets at the end of their lifecycle and adding four more at new locations.

Each Entry Statement features a different colour palette and iconography based on designs from local Nyoongar artist, Seantelle Walsh, to reflect native flora and fauna from the local area. The above example is located in Menora on the corner of Alexander Drive and Melrose Crescent and features a koolbardi or magpie.

    Youth Week events in April

Youth Week (5-12 April 2024) is WA’s largest annual celebration of young people (10-25 years), providing young people with the opportunity to express their ideas, raise important issues, make decisions, create entertainment and celebrate young people’s contribution to the community.

One of the ways the City empowers young people to have a voice in our community is through our Youth LEADS (Leadership, Empowerment, Achievement, Development & Service) program.

    Djeran — season of adulthood

Local Aboriginal-owned graphic design agency, Norlap Creative, partnered with artist Teresa Miller to create six original artworks for the City of Stirling that share the story of the Nyoongar seasons and Mooro Country native flora and fauna. The above artwork represents Djeran or autumn.

Djeran season at last sees a break in the really hot weather. A key indicator of the change of season is the cool nights that once again bring a dewy presence for us to discover in the early mornings. The winds have also changed, especially in their intensity, with light breezes being the go and generally swinging from southerly directions.

As the season progresses, the nights will become cooler and damper along with some cool and rainy days which also means that traditionally mia mias (houses or shelters) were now repaired and updated to make sure they were waterproofed and facing in the right direction in readiness for the deep wintery months to come.
