Welcome to the March edition of Stirling Scene.

2024 is going gang-busters so far with vibrant events, new facility openings, additional services and key Council decisions made over the last few weeks that will help to keep families and children safe in our community.

The City of Stirling was proud to have partnered with Perth Festival this year, delivering two exceptional programs - The Invisible Opera in Scarborough and Nightwalks with Teenagers in Mirrabooka - both of which have received rave reviews.

Our Sustainable Stirling Student Design Competition is well underway. Many students have registered to compete in this inaugural initiative ahead of Perth Design Week (14 - 21 March 2024).

I recently joined Hon Dr Anne Aly MP, Balga Ward Councillor Andrea Creado and Cavaliers Cricket Club representatives to celebrate the opening of the refurbished Princess Wallington Reserve Cricket Clubrooms in Balga. This investment will bring the facilities up to the high standard the club deserves and aims to pave the way for greater female participation.

We are excited that Transperth has decided to increase the number of 990 buses on Thursdays and Sundays to support the Scarborough Sunset Markets and higher patronage on Sundays.

The City is also enhancing pedestrian safety by making the 40km/h variable speed limit trial along Beaufort Street permanent after data showed an 88 per cent reduction in crashes in this busy area. A reduced speed limit of 40km/h has also been approved along West Coast Drive, as well as three new raised pedestrian crossings.

We are also in the middle of installing new entry statements to welcome visitors to the City and we are in the process of delivering the much-anticipated Mettams Pool access ramp to improve ocean access.

City to host major sporting events

The City of Stirling is continuing to support and host major sporting events in 2024 and 2025, which will bring visitors and locals together in our vibrant City:

During the 3x3 event the Esplanade will be closed from Scarborough Beach Road roundabout to The Lookout from 6.00am Good Friday until 10.00pm Easter Monday.

Please note this is over the Easter weekend, so access to the precinct's northern section will be from Manning Street.

Starkick initiative at the heart of recognition award

2024 Community Citizen of the Year Award winner Rob Geersen was recognised earlier this year for the work he has done to set up the Starkick Initiative. This all-abilities program unites children who share a passion for Australian Rules Football (AFL) operating in Coolbinia and North Beach.

The program has been instrumental in including children living with disabilities in their favourite Australian sporting pasttime, with support also coming from the Fremantle Dockers Foundation.

To support the work of this important community initiative or to sign up your kids for the 2024 AFL season, visit the Starkick website.

Sustainability report shows progress toward net zero

A report provided to Council on the progress of our Sustainable Energy Action Plan 2020-2030 (Corporate) has shown the City is on track to meet our 2025 interim goal to reduce emissions by 35 per cent.

1,019 kW worth of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 716t CO2-e in 2022/2023 alone, and the City's fleet now includes 28 electric vehicles (EVs). The full report can be read from page 150 of this week's Council agenda.

      Bunuru — season of adolescence

Local Aboriginal-owned graphic design agency, Norlap Creative, partnered with artist Teresa Miller to create six original artworks for the City of Stirling that share the story of the Nyoongar seasons and Mooro Country native flora and fauna. The above artwork represents Bunuru or the second summer.

Bunuru is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Therefore, traditionally this was, and still is, a great time for living and fishing by the coast, rivers and estuaries. Because of this, freshwater foods and seafood made up major parts of the diet during this time of year.

Bunuru is also a time of the white flowers with lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, including Jarrah, Marri and Ghost Gums.
