Council on the 18 March 2025 resolved to adopt Local Planning Policy 6.6 - Trees and Landscaping for the purposes of advertising.

The draft policy seeks to amend the current policy provisions and includes the removal of the residential development section (which is covered by the residential State Planning Policy 7.3). The draft policy also introduces some elements of LPP6.11 - Trees and Development which deals with 'City Trees', with the intention that LPP6.11 will be revoked upon adoption of this policy.

FAQs

No, it will be recommended that LPP6.11 is revoked once the amended LPP6.6 - Trees and Landscaping is adopted.

The State Government Planning Policy 7.3 Residential Design Codes (SPP7.3) is the framework used to assess residential development. SPP7.3 includes landscaping and tree planting requirements.

The City is proposing to retain the current ratio, this is due the introduction of minimum tree sizes and deep soil areas. The City believes that the planting of more trees doesn't necessarily result in increased tree canopy. The ability for the tree to reach maturity and thrive in its setting is more beneficial to achieving the desired canopy coverage goals.

The City is keen to hear the views of all residents and other stakeholders on the proposal.

When Council considers the comments received, it must only consider the planning merits of the comments made. The City asks that comments be limited to planning matters or impacts of the proposal.
