Make your own 'zine', be the star of a film scene, use augmented reality to design a game, or even claim some slam poetry fame.

Epic Tales is a workshop series just for young people - celebrating the stories they tell and imagine. We know they have loads to say and we want to hear it, so we've lined up some of Perth's coolest creatives to bring you an amazing series of workshops for all ages and levels at City of Stirling libraries these July school holidays. 

Using creative tools to explore their imagination and find their unique voice, the workshops with top artists, authors and makers will provide an artistic way to share their story, be creative, make people laugh and have heaps of fun. Come spin a yarn and tell your tales.

What's Your Story? Slam Poetry Workshops (13 - 17 years)

Presented by Zainab Syed

Take your story from the page to the stage in this two part workshop, focusing on how to write your story into a poem. Internationally renowned performance poet and educator Zainab Syed will lead you through writing exercises to find a story you want to tell, guide you on how to tell it best, ending with performance techniques on how to perform your story on a stage to share with everyone. 

Please note that this workshop runs for 2 days; Monday 2 July and Monday 9 July. Participants are required to attend both days. 

Location: Stirling Libraries - Scarborough

Dates and Times: 2 and 9 July, 12.30pm - 2.00pm

Here's the Story! Slam Poetry Open Mic

Presented by Zainab Syed

Come on down to the Karrinyup and Dianella Libraries for an informal open mic session with the City's newest slam poetry experts. Lend your ears and be treated to some fresh lines and performances from our up-and-coming poet-performers. Performers are encouraged to BYO audience.

The Reality Distortion Field: an Escape Room

Presented by Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie and friends

Who needs Pokemon? This is a live and immersive game experience created by young people for people of all ages. Merging the digital and physical with augmented reality, you and your team will play fiendish puzzles, search through mysterious storylines and experience beautiful visual and written art, all stitched together into an immersive game experience where you are locked in a room and have to solve the mystery to get out.

Location: Stirling Libraries - Mirrabooka 

Dates and Times:  12 - 14 July, multiple sessions

Ages: All ages (recommended ages 8 and up. Kids 12 and under must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian)

Playing with Reality: Create an Escape Room

Presented by Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie and friends

Work with an expert team to create and run an escape room game. Merging the digital and the physical with augmented reality technology, you'll create fiendish puzzles, mysterious storylines and beautiful pieces of visual and written art, all stitched together into an immersive game experience where players get locked in a room and have to solve a series of puzzles to escape.

Please note that this workshop and game runs for 6 days total. Participants will need to attend for the full 3 days of the workshop (9-11 July) and at least 1 half day during the running of the game itself (12-14 July) at a time that will be assigned during the workshop based on availability.

DIY Creators: Make Your Own Zine (8 - 11 years) - SOLD OUT

Presented by James Foley and Ken Spillman

In this one-day creative workshop, learn how to make a zine filled with your stories and illustrations. Author/illustrator James Foley and author Ken Spillman will help set your creativity free. Participants will learn a range of writing forms and illustration techniques, and fill a small booklet (called a 'zine') with the work they produce.

Green Screen VFX Stories - SOLD OUT

Presented by Filmbites Screen Academy

Bring your own story to life and learn how to create movie special effects. In this fun and interactive workshop, you will get to learn about film equipment and video effects. Then, you will get to create your own story and film your own short green screen scene. You'll get to choose your own background, act out your story and then see how to edit like a pro.
