City of Stirling Councillor since: 2007

Also elected to Council: 1996 - 2001

Term Expires: October 2019

Councillor Giovanni Italiano JP was first elected as Mayor of the City of Stirling in October 2013 and has served his second term as Mayor. Councillor Italiano is passionate about the City of Stirling, having been a resident of the Osborne Ward for more than 61 years. He is a registered builder and has a keen interest in improving the local economy and growth opportunities to ensure Stirling is a strong and prosperous City for all residents and ratepayers to enjoy.

At the age of three, Councillor Italiano moved to Perth as a migrant with his Italian parents. His father passed away when he was 13, after which he left school and got a job as a concreter to help his mum pay the bills. At 17, he started running his own concreting business employing several men much older than he was. He never imagined in a million years that he would serve two terms as Mayor of the City of Stirling. From migrant to Mayor, this has been his journey. Councillor Italiano believes that Australia is such a land of opportunity and he is proof that if you commit yourself and work hard anything is possible. For as long as he can remember he has been a resident of the City of Stirling and is very proud to be serving the public that he has lived amongst since he was a little boy. He is proud to call himself a Stirling boy through and through.

Being a concreter by trade and running his own building business, Councillor Italiano had a natural interest and ongoing relationship with Council in terms of developments, beyond just being a ratepayer. He had a keen interest in what projects were approved by Council and a genuine interest in the right outcomes for his area. This experience has given him excellent insight into how local government works and the services it provides to residents. Councillor Italiano is pro-business, he has made some real headway into increasing the amount of business investment in the City.

He has also streamlined processes, to make doing business with the City easier for residents and business investors. He wants to make sure that businesses continue to be attracted to 'set up shop' in the City of Stirling.
