Adopt-A-Park

Adopt-A-Park is a community led initiative, with a solution focused approach, managed and co-ordinated by the City of Stirling.

The project was developed to encourage local residents to take back ownership of their local park as an Adopt-A-Park Supporter with park users taking the role of trusted guardians – maintaining their park and enhancing their enjoyment of their green open-spaces; and for park neighbours to become ‘good neighbours’ – keeping an eye on the property when the occupants aren’t home, and providing an extension of the natural surveillance that occurs during daylight hours.

Why do we need local Adopt-A-Park Supporters?
The 1342 hectares of parks and reserves enjoyed by thousands of City of Stirling residents are one of our most valuable community assets: to achieve a sustainable future for approximately 50 major sports reserves and over 400 other parks; and 500 hectares of natural bushland; it is essential that the community actively engage in the life of their parks and reserves.

Both the Community and the City value clean, well maintained facilities that are well cared for, look attractive and feel safe: however the actions of a minority who cause damage or misuse their local park are at odds with those values.

Support from local communities enables the City of Stirling Rangers, Security and Parks staff to look after this asset more effectively; by offering to provide regular monitoring and passive surveillance of their local park volunteers will be establishing a win-win partnership with the City of Stirling.

What are the objectives of the Adopt-A-Park project?

  • Reduce anti-social behaviour and vandalism in parks and reserves
  • Enhance the general appearance of the City’s parks and reserves
  • Educate and inform park users of local laws and initiatives and provide feedback
  • Promote and instil community pride in local parks and reserves
  • Provide a sustainable future for one of the City’s major assets

Why should I register to be a Supporter?

  • As a park user you are in the best position to know what is happening in your park and to help the City respond appropriately; as such you are an invaluable community asset
  • You will receive simple guidelines on what to do in given situations and, where appropriate, on the spot solutions
  • You will be given information about whom to contact when you witness behaviour that is suspicious, illegal or irresponsible; saving you time and removing the frustration when trying to alert the relevant authorities
  • Together with other like-minded people you will be playing an active role in the life of your park; demonstrating to those few that misuse these public green spaces, that their behaviour is unacceptable to the majority
