Community Safe Speed Promise

Community Safe Speed Promise
Sick of motorists speeding in your street?
Us too!! So lets form an active visible community group of non-speeders!

The Safe Speed Promise works like a treaty between neighbourhoods, stating “we will act as a guest in your neighbourhood if you act as a guest in ours”.

The initiative asks residents to sign a Safe Speed Promise and commit to driving within the speed limit and being a courteous driver. The City will provide a bumper sticker and fridge magnet for residents that sign the pledge so they are easily identifiable and can set an example for other motorists to follow.

When Safe Speed drivers slow down, they reduce the impact of their car use on the communities they drive through and encourage following cars to observe the speed limits. They also reduce their own stress levels, become more connected to the communities they travel through, and help create a more relaxed life-style which enriches the entire culture of our City!

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my car really make a difference?
Yes. Even a small percentage of Safe Speed vehicles will slow down traffic throughout the City and start a positive cycle. People will feel more comfortable walking or cycling, resulting in reduced traffic levels and safer streets.

Does the Safe Speed provoke road rage?
No. Many people who join the Safe Speed initiative are already unofficial Safe Speed drivers and statistics indicate that incidents of road rage decreased when their vehicles displayed the Safe Speed sticker. The Safe Speed sticker indicates to other drivers that you are supporting a worthy cause by keeping within the speed limit.

What happens if I accidentally speed?
Take a breath and slow down. The Safe Speed Promise is a declaration of intent, not a legally binding contract. Kicking the speeding habit can be hard work, so next time, allow yourself more travel time and you will not be so tempted to speed.

Do I only act as a Safe Speed in my neighbourhood or on all streets?
When you become a Safe Speed driver you need to slow down in all streets. By joining the Safe Speed initiative you pledge to respect the quality of life in all neighbourhoods.

The funding for the Community Safe Speed Promise project was provided by the Community Road Safety Grants Program which is funded by the Road Trauma Trust Fund administered by the Road Safety Council.
