Verge Bulk Waste Collection

This service is provided to all households in the City for the collection of items that are too large for the weekly bin collection service.

The City conducts four bulk waste or verge collections each year. These collections consist of two household junk collections (Winter and Summer) and two green waste collections (Spring and Autumn).

Verge Collection Dates
Residents will receive prior notice in the form of a brochure delivered in the letterbox. These are circulated to households approximately two weeks prior to each collection, giving residents two weekends to prepare.  Waste should only be placed on the verge on receipt of this brochure.

To find out the estimated date for your next verge collection please use the search function below.

Please be aware of the following:

  • It is an offence to place waste on the verge:  Before you have received your brochure; after the street has been cleared; or when a collection is not taking place.
  • Green waste and household junk must only be placed on your verge during the respective collections.
  • Placing waste on the verge outside your specified collection is considered as illegal dumping and can attract a fine of $1,000.

Please note this search function is to be used as a guide only and is subject to change.  No materials should be placed on the verge until you are in receipt of the City's brochure inviting you to do so.

(Please enter only the name of your street/road/avenue, i.e. type 'Jones' only and not 'Jones Street').

Collection Guidelines
To allow the City to provide a more efficient verge collection service and to minimize time delays please follow the instructions below:

  • Do not place materials on the verge so that it may:  Obstruct footpaths or driveways; overhang on the road; or obstruct the view from driveways.
  • Keep all materials clear of fences, water meters, sprinklers and any fixed objects.
  • Comply with the simple directions contained in the brochure delivered.

The brochures delivered give information regarding the placement of waste on the verge, how to maximise recycling, and a list of incorrect items for the junk collection.  Please click below to see a copy of each brochure.

Recycling Information

  • Plastics, scrap metal and cardboard is recycled from the junk verge collections (subject to available resources and markets).
  • All household plastics from garden furniture to plastic wrapping and styrene packaging can be recycled.
  • All the green waste is shredded and used to make horticultural products such as mulch and compost.
  • Garden waste buried in landfill generates greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change and should be avoided.
  • When recycling garden waste by mulching or composting, the carbon is returned to the soil and locked away until bacteria and plants consume it as a part of the carbon cycle.

Recycling of Unwanted Household Goods and Garden Waste

Unwanted Household Goods
Sustainable cities minimise the amount of waste they send to landfill.

You can recycle the following goods, which must be clean and in good condition:

  • Used clothing
  • Bric-a-brac
  • Furniture
  • Household goods

By taking a few moments to collect the items that you no longer need and choosing one of the options below, you can make a real difference to the environment:

  • Contact one of the charities listed below for a home collection.
  • Take to the Recycling Centre Balcatta (accepted at the discretion of the recycling attendant).
  • Hold a garage sale.

Charities offering a home collection service include:

  • Anglicare:                           6253 3535
  • Good Samaritan Industries:  1300 855 130
  • Para – Quad Industries:        9381 0111
  • Salvation Army:                   13 72 58

Garden Waste
All the green waste collected during the verge collections is recycled.

To recycle garden waste at any time choose one of the following options:

You can utilise your one tip pass for free disposal of garden waste at the Recycling Centre Balcatta.  For more information and conditions click here.

Without a valid tip pass, a fee will apply (based on the 'pay by weight' policy) at the Recycling Centre Balcatta as the City has to pay transport and processing costs.  (If the garden waste is contaminated with junk it will be classed as mixed waste and a higher fee will be charged to dispose of this non-recyclable waste).

Free Mulch
To make your garden water wise, please refer to the Yellow Pages under 'Mulch' or 'Tree Services' for companies offering free mulch.
