Financial Counselling is a free and confidential service to all City of Stirling residents’ who may be experiencing problems with their financial affairs. It is jointly funded by the Department for Child Protection and The City of Stirling and is not linked to any financial institutions or money lenders.
Financial Counsellors provide information and options providing you with the skills to take control of your financial situation. Financial Counsellors can negotiate on your behalf and provide you with the skills to develop and use a budget.
Financial Counsellors can refer you to other specialized services or emergency relief outlets that may be able to provide emergency relief assistance to you.

How can a Financial Counsellor help you?
Financial Counsellors can provide information on a wide range of credit related problems. Financial Counsellors can assist with making arrangements to pay bills, negotiate with creditors, suggest money management strategies such as budgets and advocate on your behalf.
Financial Counsellors are not legal practitioners (lawyers or solicitors), however, they can provide you with information concerning your rights and responsibilities under credit related laws.
Independent Information
Financial Counsellors are specifically trained to provide independent and confidential information to allow you to make the best decisions for your money management.
Overdue Accounts
Financial Counsellors explain your options if you cannot pay now. Financial Counsellors can assist you in negotiation with your creditors regarding bills, loans, mortgages, credit cards etc. where you have difficulty maintaining repayments.
Advocacy
Financial Counsellors can advocate for you and help you get your point across, if you feel unable to communicate effectively.
Money Plans
Financial Counsellors assist you to develop a money plan to improve your money management skills. The Financial Counsellor will take into consideration your individual family needs.
Bankruptcy
Financial Counsellors are able to give information on bankruptcy and help you explore other options.
Housing
Financial Counsellors are able to assist and provide information with housing issues, such as eviction, mortgages, rental issues and Homeswest.
Appeals
Financial Counsellors understand the appeal procedures of the Department of Social Security and Homeswest. They are able to give you information and assistance if necessary to help you through the Social Security Appeals system or Homeswest Appeals Tribunal.
Referral
Financial Counsellors cannot help in all situations, and may need to refer you for specialist assistance to another service. You may also request assistance in being referred to other areas.
Education and Information
Financial Counsellors also offer small group education sessions in the community. These include "Money Planning", the "Pitfalls of Credit", and other topics as requested.
Legal Documents
Financial Counsellors are able to explain certain legal documents related to debt recovery. These include letters of demand, a claim, property seizure and sale order or means tests.
Financial Counsellors can assist you in taking the appropriate course of action if you have received these documents, or assist you to seek legal opinion where required.
